My name's Juliet Cleave (the Kew herd), and a few years ago I persuaded Camelford Show committee (on which I do NOT sit) to reintroduce Devon classes as it would be nice to see specific classes for a traditional breed of the area, that is happily seeing a resurgence in popularity.
The last 2 years have been awkward for Camelford Show as last year it was a washout (it didn't run) and the previous year foot & mouth restrictions prevented livestock classes. Meanwhile, some Devon breeders that are very local to the show (and who've supported it previously) are struggling, I understand, with TB. All told, I'm concerned that if there isn't a reasonable turn out of Devons at this year's Camelford Show, the Devon classes may fold - which would be a real shame for the breed itself.
So my point in contacting you is this: please consider exhibiting at this year's Camelford Show! Devon classes include bull, cow (or in calf heifer) and yearling heifer; aswell as steer & heifer classes in the commercial section and young stockman (beef, and overall versus dairy young stockman). It's a friendly one day event, a great place for novice exhibitors with the bonus of specific Devon silverware/DCBS sash for champion Devon. So there's something for everyone; we'll be there with some of our Devons - hope some of you will be able to join us.
