Twinning in the Metamorphosis in the City report

Transition Twinning, initiative of Transition North Cornwall, has been picked up as one of a few exemplar projects in a new report called Metamorphosis in the City from Ecology and Development (ECODES), an independent nonprofit organisation which focuses its work in Spain and Latin America to promote sustainable development.

The catalogue Metamorphosis in the City: Innovative Social Initiatives intends to reveal some principles for achieving sustainability in cities and provide real examples of where they are implemented. Creative and innovative projects which incorporate social, political, educational and economic dimensions have been selected as examples of "metamorphosis" or better models for cities and citizenship. Key aspects of the projects have been summarized to facilitate easy dissemination. Moreover, the catalog is available in three languages, Spanish, Chinese and English, three of the most widely spoken languages in the world. The main objective of the catalogue is to create a platform for successful but often little known initiatives and to facilitate their replication and adaptation to other contexts. The catalogue also highlights the work of social organizations, which often are more innovative in their approach to sustainability and aspire to make a difference.

The catalogue develops some essential principles to achieve sustainability in cities from a range of experiences. Although not exhaustive, it is relevant and international, covering various themes and including examples from five continents that are complimentary and can be transferred elsewhere.

Energy efficiency and a commitment to renewable energy are two important components that contribute towards more sustainable cities and help to reduce cities? large carbon footprints. The Efficient Workplaces project in Spain promotes energy saving practices throughout city offices by improving energy management and increasing awareness among employees. Similarly, the Low Carbon City Initiative (LCCI) in China aims to reduce the environmental impacts of greenhouse gas emissions and reduce energy consumption by focusing on energy efficiency in buildings and efficient manufacturing in various Chinese cities.
Cities can not and should not be isolated from the countryside and the natural resources which guarantee that they function. Transition Twinning initiative, which is part of the Transition Towns network, aims to create rural - urban partnerships, through school and holiday exchanges and to encourage technical and cultural cooperation between communities to promote the consumption of zero carbon food. Creating alliances between different economic, social and political stakeholders to manage natural resources effectively is another important aspect of sustainability. The Tacaná and Cahoacan projects conducted by the IUCN?s Water and Nature program illustrate how participatory planning and management of water resources improve communities? welfare and, ecosystems and improve quality of life in human settlements.
