MP praises fascinating renewable energy project

'MP praises fascinating renewable energy project' and other stories have appeared in Cornwall newspapers, magazines and BBC Radio Cornwall in support on the national Climate Week and Cottage Farm, the first SuperHome (www.superhomes.org.uk) in Cornwall and one of the first organic farms powered by renewable energy, producing and delivering food entirely without the use of fossil fuels

Here are just a few snippets:

Green life lesson at county's first SuperHome
THE COUNTY'S first energy- saving Superhome has been visited in Climate Week by North Cornwall MP Dan Rogerson, his family and local councillors.

Paul and Celia Sousek live at Cottage Farm at Jacobstow, an organic farm and so far Cornwall's only SuperHome, retrofitted with energy-saving measures and renewable energy equipment, which cut its carbon emissions by at least 60 per cent – though Mr Sousek says in their case the figure is more like 110 per cent.

"That's not a misprint," he said. "We've done it by reducing our energy consumption and by generating more energy than we need to run our home, to run our farm, to drive and to deliver our farm produce to our customers.

"We now use almost no fossil fuels, have minimal energy bills and the fresh Red Ruby meat boxes we deliver to customers all over North Cornwall are not only organic, but also carbon-neutral and much more environmentally friendly."

Farming organically, they do not use expensive fertilisers, and with such low energy bills their meat is now cheaper than in conventional shops.

Cottage Farm holds free open days every month or so to spread the word about the practical benefits of energy-efficiency.

To attend the next, taking place on May 8, or any future open days, book a place at www.Superhomes.org.uk or e-mail Cottage.Farm@tiscali.co.uk

The visitors were treated to a presentation on the technology of ultra-low-carbon farming which Mr Sousek had previously given at the House of Commons to an all-party parliamentary group.

Mr Rogerson said: "It was fascinating to see how Mr Sousek has made it totally carbon-neutral.

"Projects like this take a lot of time and effort but the rewards are without question, as Mr Sousek is a net exporter of energy.

"He uses many types of renewable technologies and energy efficiencies which could be adopted on other farms. The vision he has makes a significant contribution to the debate about future food production."

“It was fascinating to see how Mr Sousek, the farm’s owner, has made it totally carbon neutral.

“Projects like this take a lot of time and effort but the rewards are without question as Mr Sousek is a net exporter of energy.

“He uses many types of renewable technologies and energy efficiencies which could be adopted on other farms. The vision he has makes a significant contribution to the debate about future food production.”

“I thank both Paul and Celia for opening up their home and farm to show us what they have achieved”
