Transition News September 2011

Hello and welcome to the September issue covering both local and some national events, news, stories and more.

As we watch with morbid fascination the unfolding of the collapse scenario, with economists, politicians and experts ever more desperately trying to understand what is happing to their beloved growth economy, our 'leaders' are groping around for any tool, however unlikely or unsuitable, to extract some kind of growth from from the decomposing corpse of our economy.

It must by now be clear to everybody, but the self-deluded, that our economy, squeezed under a slowly descending glass ceiling of total available energy and its consequent high cost, will not and cannot grow beyond that ceiling and thus our various debts become ever more clearly unaffordable and un-repayable. Financial collapse is just around the corner, it is simply a question of time - exactly which event will trigger that is unclear, but that it will be soon, that much is clear.

Any grandiose plans for converting the whole of our society to a new state of perpetual recession in an organised and human way are dissolving in the acid of denial, incredulity, disinterest and ignorance. So it is down to us as individuals, and if we are lucky, part of our immediate communities, to safeguard our food supplies, our energy, and basic local services as the best available Energy Descent Plan we can muster.

Here are a few events and ideas that may help, and news stories that may inform:
