Transition News March 2009

Hello fellow Transitioners,

Can it really be March already? The daffodils are out, the sun is shining and we are calving and lambing at the same time. It must be!

With the Spring has come a burst of activity:

12 Mar, Crude Awakening, Launceston : We are showing this documentary on the planet's dwindling oil resources at Liberty House, Launceston. To be followed by discussion and an inaugural meeting of Transition Launceston. Be there is you live near Launceston.

15 Mar, The Age of Stupid premier : ‘The People’s Premiere’ launches Pete Postlethwaite’s new climate movie on March 15 from solar cinema tent in Leicester Square and across the UK via satellite link-up. Followed by Q&A with filmmakers & special guests and Pete Postlethwaite launches Not Stupid campaign. Then local speakers in each venue. Nearest cinemas to us are: The Eden Project (sold out) and the Vue in Plymouth. Should be great!

19 Mar, Money As Debt, Bude : Ever wonder why banks have so much money to play with and everybody else has debt? An entertaining highly topical film explaining how money is created and why our current financial system is breaking down. This short film is an essential viewing if you want to understand what the current financial turmoil is all about, why it may end in a global financial meltdown and how you can protect yourself. To be followed by a discussion of the film and of the Transition movement.
Transition is coming to Bude. Come and be part of it!

Date: Monday 19 March, 7:30pm. Venue: The Parkhouse Centre, Bude, EX23 8LD. Free Entry, suggested contribution £2/person

23 Mar - Money As Debt, Bodmin : Highlighting the downfalls of our present monetary system which has developed largely on the back of an easy and cheap supply of energy, the film will be particularly relevant in the current economic climate and to anyone feeling the effects of the current recession.
7pm in Public Rooms, Small Hall, Mount Folly, Bodmin, PL31 2DQ. To be followed at approximately 8:30pm by Transition North Cornwall AGM.

2nd May, Wadebridge, GREEN FAIR 2009 : “HEALTHY PLANET–HEALTHY PEOPLE”: Camel Area Friends of the Earth invite you to join them at Wadebridge Town Hall on Saturday 2nd May. 9.30am – 4.30pm.

The TNC website www.TransitionNC.org is developing at a breathtaking pace. In its short existence since its launch in August 2008 it has so far attracted 141 registered users, it has 40 individual Parish sections, 355 comments, news, events and other stories published, and it has had over 26,000 hits. On average it attracts 30 visitors per day with a maximum achieved of 800 in one day. Over 200 people are on our mailing list of contacts who requested email updates on activities.

The 40 Parish sections are intended for local Parish based groups to use as they wish. For examples how this space can be used see Jacobstow, Launceston or St Gennys. If you need any help with, do let me know.

The Transition Resources section lists lots of information sources helpful in setting, informing or running a transition group. The Organizations section lists several useful transition related projects and organizations. For example Freecycle, CoaST (Cornwall Sustainable Tourism Project), Fair Shares, Fair Choice and Build It Solar. Even farmers now have their own section: Farmers in Transition .

Amongst the many other entries are these 'credit crunch' crunchers
Zopa: Social lending - a marketplace for social lending. People lend and borrow money from each other, sidestepping the banks.
LETS barter! - LETS, or Local Exchange Trading Systems, are local community trading groups where members exchange their goods and services with each other in a spirit of harmony and a genuine desire to help each other without any money ever changing hands!

Let me know if you may be interested in either of these and I will set it up on the website.

We are planning a 'members only' section. If you are not yet a member of Transition North Cornwall (free of charge) just reply to this email with your full name, address and tel number.

And now back outside. It just never stops!

All the best

Paul
