Transition Lostwithiel News- September 2013

Welcome to the September 2013 e-newsletter

Ragged Edges (Lostwithiel's self-help Sewing Group) invite you to a drop in coffee morning, showcasing organic textiles, and beautiful lace by Sian of Lancaster and Cornish on Thursday 19th September, 10-12 midday, Methodist Chapel Rooms. Find out about this exciting new local enterprise.

We have had a great year... Donations are higher and more swapping than ever took place... Thank you to the volunteers who man the stall and all those who support the stall and come and swap. Meanwhile, SHRUB and PLANT RESCUE is going really well. So far we have rescued hebes, Mexican sage, lupins , rosemary, hydrangeas, agaves and many more which have found new homes. Contact Lesley Bower 01208 873363 if you have plants you no longer want but somebody else will.

In October... Contact Dianne on 872303 if you have jumbly stuff you no longer want... Sorry they can't take electrical items.

If you are looking for anything for free! or have items to give away, (rather than take to the landfill sites where it will be buried), then just take a look at the new LOSTCYCLE board in the Community Centre.

Lostwithiel Station Signal box has been Grade II listed along with Par Signal box as being one of 26 in England of special design.

There is now a food bank at St Bart's. Staple Store Cupboard items please, no fresh food. Any tins/jars/boxes of tea bags/coffee/pasta etc. can be taken to the Church office in the vestry (entrance in North Street area) from Monday – Friday 9-11am.

We're delighted we've been able to pass on the money that YOU have given to us to a number of local groups this year including Lost In Play, Lostwithiel Museum, FOSB and the Methodist Chapel Boiler Fund. Full list here

Where can you get the latest railway and bus timetables and information and much more in Lostwithiel????

Run completely by volunteers - there is no County Council funding - it promotes the town, businesses and the area to many visitors and local people all year. If you want to help contact the Community Centre.

Just a thought - Stay Safe:
The weather has been glorious, but the heat means we all need to drink more water to stay hydrated
If you're drinking water from a plastic bottle - which is expensive and never that great from an environmental point of view - the exposure to the chemicals that leach from the plastic into the water is also made worse by the heat
So, if you're out and about, drink filtered or natural tap water from a non-plastic refillable bottle - it’s better for you and the environment

A Glut of Cucumbers? Here's a recipe to go with cold meats and cheese:

Bowery Cucumber Jam
1kg/2lb 3oz peeled cucumber
1kg/2lb 3oz sugar 2 tablespoons water
Juice of 2 lemons

Dice the cucumber and simmer in the water until soft. Add the lemon juice and sugar, stir, boil hard until setting point (test small amount on a cold saucer - if it wrinkles then it is at setting point). Jar up in sterilized jars and seal with wax circles and tighten lid well.

Optional: add a little ground ginger during cooking
