Wren News Spring 2013

WREN TO Host Green Energy Village at Royal Cornwall Show

We are delighted to announce that WREN will be hosting the Green Energy Village at the Royal Cornwall Show this year.

A partnership with the Cornwall Development Company, the dynamic Green Energy Village helps visitors to the Royal Cornwall Showground find out more about low carbon technologies from a wide range of reputable businesses and advisors.

Ask questions of qualified experts, or simply find out about the latest money and energy-saving technologies for the home, business or farm.

The Royal Cornwall Show 2013 will take place on the 6, 7 and 8 of June. Pre-order your tickets at www.royalcornwallshow.org.

WREN recogniSED nationalLY

We are entering a new phase with much more capacity and recognition, including a £100,000 grant over two years from the Coastal Communities Fund.

This Fund comes from the Crown Estate's income from its coastal assets, and is used to enhance the economic well-being of coastal towns.

WREN is a not-for-profit cooperative, owned by you, our 790+ members, and is on the way to becoming a self-sustaining business that will bring jobs, investment and income for good causes to the area, whilst making energy less of a cost and more of an asset for fellow residents.

But it is difficult to start a business with no investment funding, and on volunteer efforts alone.

Most of the work will always be done by volunteers, but this allocation from the Coastal Communities Fund will allow us to incorporate some professional capacity to make us just that more successful in securing all the benefits of the low carbon economy.

Thanks to this fund, we will now be able to recruit an Operations Manager, to be based at the Energy Shop.

l We have also been shortlisted for an Ashden Award, which is the Olympic Gold for sustainability and low carbon projects like ours. Just being shortlisted is a great honour, and winners are given long-term advice and support. That will not stop the June awards ceremony from being a nail-biting event!

Green Deal and ECO

You may have heard the words 'Green Deal' quite a bit recently in the media.

Now WREN has access to this incentive, which could pay for installation of various types of insulation, renewable heating systems and energy generation technologies.

It works like a loan that is paid back through your utility bills, but at a rate that should not increase those bills. In other words, the loan repayments should be equal to or less than the savings in fuel costs.

Added to this, and for a limited period only, there is some additional grant funding – called ECO – that could pay, for example, for up to 60% of the cost of solid wall insulation.

If you have a solid walled house, and feel you have missed out on the cavity wall insulation everyone else has had access to, now is the time to act. Solid walls are insulated either inside the house, or outside if the walls have been previously rendered.

And don’t forget Green Deal Saturday – see Forthcoming Dates opposite.
