In Cornwall we have some of the best solar and wind resources in Europe. In Cornwall Council we also have one of the most forward-looking local authorities in seeking to harness the benefits of the low carbon economy for its population. We could build a sustainable future where our students would not have to choose between low pay and leaving home. Our local economy would be less dependent upon the public sector and upon pension income, both of which are increasingly precarious. With local renewable energy and rapid broadband, many areas of economic development would no longer depend on proximity to metropolitan centres. If you were a twenty something innovator in the digital industries, where would you rather be? In Slough, where surfing opportunities are limited, or in the (Silicon) Camel Valley?

Cornwall was once in the vanguard in extracting wealth from our primary resources. We can continue to exploit that history as a tourist attraction, but we should also repeat the trick by maximising the local benefits that can follow harvesting the wind, sun, wave, tidal and geothermal energy that are all around and beneath us. It is essential that large numbers of our communities tell the Government loud and clear – “You clearly want to kill the green field PV industry, but in the process do not kill this unique opportunity for a prosperous and sustainable future”.
