12Jun2014: The grand unveiling of 'Trawler Trash'

The grand unveiling of 'Trawler Trash' at the Environment and Sustainability Institute (Penryn)

You, your friends, family and colleagues are warmly invited to the University of Exeter's Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI) at Penryn Campus, on Thursday 12th June - 16.30 - 19.00 for the grand unveiling of a unique art work: 'Trawler Trash' by Liz Franklin (see a sneak preview of the art work in progress here: http://www.exeter.ac.uk/esi/research/creativeexchangeprogramme/allwashedup/)

Liz Franklin developed the concept of 'Trawler Trash, a large 3m X 3m artwork, and was helped in its production by 100 Cornwall schoolchildren who attended the ESI's Environment and Sustainability day earlier in April.

This event is part of a wider ESI-RANE Creative Exchange project between Dr Matthew Witt (Lecturer in Natural Environment) and Claire Wallerstein of charity Rame Peninsula Beach Care exploring the impact of plastics and rubbish on our marine environment. A wider exhibition of artworks called 'All Washed Up' will also be available for viewing on the day, with artworks produced by: Janine Rook, Jill Holland, Nicola White, Audrey Ryder, Rob Arnold, Liz and Claire.

Both Matt and Claire will be giving an update on their collaboration, including a project taking place on 25 May aiming to weigh, count, sort EVERY piece of plastic from a discrete South East Cornwall cove in Whitsand Bay. The evening will also screen some short fun films and videos from recent project activity.

There will also be more information on Rame Peninsula Beach Care's planned conference at the National Maritime Museum on 21st July 2014, bringing together scientists, campaigners and representatives from the plastics industry.

There is no need to register your attendance, please come along to the ESI on 12th June at 16.00 to find out more (directions here: http://www.exeter.ac.uk/visit/directions/cornwallmap/). Children are welcome to attend and refreshments will be provided.

If you have any questions or queries please do not hesitate to contact Kerri Popperwell (k.popperwell@exeter.ac.uk)

Best wishes
