18Jun2012: Can localism deliver climate change action?

Can localism deliver climate change action?
Views from Coalition MPs

Monday 18 June, Houses of Parliament

Registration from 4pm for a prompt 4.30pm start

Dear colleague,

The localism agenda is central to the Coalition’s programme for government. It has the potential to result in innovative approaches to tackling climate change and powerful new partnerships to drive action. But it also presents challenges, as meeting national climate change targets relies on local commitment to reducing emissions.

What are the challenges of ensuring that localism delivers for climate change? How can we ensure that local areas are motivated and empowered to show leadership on this issue, and what is the role for national government in supporting them? This event will launch a new pamphlet, as part of Green Alliance’s Climate Leadership Programme, with articles by three Coalition MPs - Damian Hinds, MP for East Hampshire; Martin Vickers, MP for Cleethorpes; and Julian Huppert, MP for Cambridge. It explores how the government can link two crucial aims: tackling climate change and empowering local areas.

I am delighted to invite you to join us in the Grand Committee Room in Westminster Hall for a debate amongst our impressive panel and invited audience.

Confirmed panel:

Tim Yeo MP, chair of the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee

Damian Hinds MP, MP for East Hampshire and pamphlet contributor

David Kennedy, chief executive of the Committee on Climate Change

Cllr Kilian Bourke, leader of the Liberal Democrat group, Cambridgeshire County Council

Chaired by Rebecca Willis, Green Alliance associate and former vice chair of the Sustainable Development Commission

Monday 18 June, 4.30 – 5.45pm (registration from 4pm)

Grand Committee Room, Westminster Hall, Palace of Westminster (please use St. Stephen’s entrance – number 8 on map)
