14Jan2012: Low Carbon Communities Conference

The Low Carbon Communities Conference “New times, new ways forward” is set for the 14th January 2012 at the Kings’ Conference Centre, Oxford. Our 2012 annual conference will look at new ways forward for community action in a time of significant economic and social change. National speakers will include Jonathon Porritt, former head of the Sustainable Development commission. Local organisations from across the UK will also be well represented, along with speakers from local government, universities, and energy companies. It will focus on two key areas:

Community Energy – now and for the future
New partnerships to tackle climate change

The conference will include four main sessions:

Opening session: keynote speakers to consider the challenges and opportunities facing those tackling climate change and working on community energy.

Community Energy – now and for the future, short plenary followed by parallel workshop sessions (each will be repeated) on issues including:
Community Renewables: new developments and opportunities
Green Dealing? What will the new national energy programme mean for community groups?
Working with the Feed-In Tariffs
Home Energy Efficiency – lessons from leading projects
Energy efficiency, renewables and fuel poverty: How can community action link environmental economic and social goals?
Making a difference? evaluating the impacts we make

New partnerships to tackle climate change, short plenary followed by parallel workshop sessions on:
Communities working with local councils and other agencies
How can communities access and work with the expertise and information in our universities?
How can voluntary groups work well with social enterprises and other new structures?
Communities and the private sector – challenges and opportunities

Next steps and the years to come. Keynote speakers and discussion on the developing roles of community-based organisations.

We invite you to join us for this exciting and dynamic event, to further develop the role of community action in tackling climate change and creating a low-carbon society. We expect over 200 local community-based organisations to take part in this free event.
