4Feb2010: Fixing Fuel Poverty

We are pleased to announce that Dr Brenda Boardman will be giving a lecture on Fixing Fuel Poverty: Challenges and Solutions on the evening of the 4th February at Tremough campus, Penryn. Further details are given below:

Dr Brenda Boardman
Fixing Fuel Poverty: Challenges and Solutions
Lecture A, Du Maurier Building, Tremough Campus,
6.30 pm 4th February 2010

Dr Brenda Boardman is the author of the recently published 'Fixing fuel poverty: challenges and solutions' Her book examines why the numbers of households in fuel poverty are rising - currently 5m in the UK - despite the government's legal obligation to eradicate fuel poverty by 2016. With over 45,000 households in Cornwall believed to be living in fuel poverty this is clearly a subject relevant to Cornwall and the south west. Many of the lessons from the UK are germaine for other countries beginning to experience worsening fuel poverty, particularly in Eastern and Central Europe. The European Commission now requires action on fuel poverty in all Member States, through the revised Electricity Directive.

Brenda is an Emeritus Fellow at the Oxford University's Environmental Change Institute; was the former head of the Lower Carbon Futures team and a co-director of the UK Energy Research Centre. Her main research focus is on how to achieve demand reduction in energy across the UK economy, in particular the built environment including energy efficiency and energy use in British homes, particularly by low-income households, i.e. fuel poverty. She considers the behavioural, technical, economic, social and political aspects of the subject and her work has a strong policy emphasis. She has been a member of the DTI's Energy Advisory Panel and is widely viewed as one of the most experienced in her field. She was awarded an MBE in 1998 for her work on energy issues.

The talk should be of interest to all those involved in energy issues, whether from an academic, policy or practical side.
Tea and coffee will be available from 6pm onwards and there will be an opportunity to network informally over drinks after the talk.

If you would like to attend please register with Josie Turner at J.Turner@exeter.ac.uk.
